3 Steps to Increase Connection to God’s Presence
Many of us would love to carry a greater awareness of God’s presence. It makes everything in our life so much bigger, and richer. The difficulty is we can often let the presence of God in our life become something almost accidental or coincidental. We may think, “God just showed up and there is nothing I did to make this happen.” yet that is only one side of the coin. The quality of His presence in our life is also the result of the quality of attention we give to it. I believe there are steps we can take to move into grace and increase the ability to carry more of God’s presence! Imagine the presence of God like a cell phone signal. We may always have connection, but is the strength of the signal at the five bars we pay for, or are we settling for a poor quality of connection. The amazing thing about God’s presence is we can access it anywhere and anytime. The key to increasing the signal is becoming highly aware of what is already there!
I want to share with you an easily memorable 3 steps to increasing awareness of the presence of God for your week. This simple 3 steps will help you see the world differently, who you are differently, and give you the confidence that God is with you. I started practicing this years ago and it has changed so much of how I do life. Now, what once seemed like a discipline has become very natural and organic. Whether I am hanging with the family, speaking at a meeting, meeting up with friends, or heading to bed I find myself aware of His presence more often because I am intentionally putting myself in a place to receive His presence. There is a sort of ABC process to experiencing greater awareness of God’s presence all around us. When God’s presence gets on us we experience inward joy, inner peace, an abundant heart, and carry him to such a place that we can touch others with the presence we are experiencing. That is the place where what we are experiencing in God goes viral. We become a hotspot, contagious with God’s presence and others get to experience the overflow of our relationship. Imagine the heart like a container much like a cup is to water. As the cup gets filled up, the overflow begins to happen. As King David writes in Psalm 23:5b “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” As we get filled up with His presence, others around us experience the overflow!
Let’s jump in to this simple three step process to having more of God’s presence in our life. The ABC’s are A. Attention, B. Be__ing, and C. Carrying.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Collisions 3:1. NIV
The act of paying attention to something is unbelievably powerful. Google is paid massive amounts of cash every year just from people paying attention to the marketing ads placed on a website. People, places, things everywhere are looking to capture your attention. When we set our attention long enough on something we begin to connect with it. Attention is the act of regarding something or someone as interesting.
When we give our attention to God’s presence, we start to notice it. It’s kind of like when we start to get something in our mind, a new car, a certain person, a vacation spot, etc. As we start to give our attention to these things we start to notice whatever it is coming up more often in conversation with other people. We might think, “Wow, everywhere I go see that car!” The reality is, that car has been everywhere already! Whatever we pay attention to, we notice more often.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; Psalms 46:10a NIV
Be__ing is about taking a moment to be in His presence from a place of either believing or belonging. Believing and belonging are the two ways of being in God’s presence. If we are connecting to His presence in believing we are responding to who God is in us. If we are connecting to God’s presence in belonging we are responding to who we are in Him. This is an opportunity to respond to what you are connecting to about God. As we rest in His presence, we are letting something very special happen. In this place our being becomes believing and belonging.
Now before we move on to the next step I want you to imagine God’s presence like a glue. I take the glue and I place it on something. I don’t immediately move it though! The directions give me a certain time to let the glue dry. It could be five minutes or it could be longer. If we let the glue dry we can then move it about without the concern of disconnection. Being in God’s presence is about letting His presence rest long enough to fully receive the moment of connection you are having with him. Let his presence stick to you and remember this, let the glue dry!
God said, “My presence will go with you. I’ll see the journey to the end.” Exodus 33:14 The Message
Carrying God’s presence is taking what has happened to you in attention and be__ing and carrying that profound awareness of God’s presence with you into everyday situations. Whether you are heading to an interview, or in the middle of class or heading off to meet someone you can now carry your awareness of God’s presence with you everywhere. Something happens during steps A and B and it shifts your awareness from self conscious and insecure to God conscious and overflowing! Take advantage of what has happened to you in steps A and B and let God’s presence go with you.
Perhaps some will try these steps and complain that nothing happened. Let me encourage you! Take the next 7 days. Make these ABC’s part of your daily morning routine. Do this like it is your morning breakfast. Grab your coffee or tea or whatever and take a minute to do these ABC’s. No one walks into the gym with 14 inch biceps and walks out with 19”s the same day. Give it time and practice these steps and you will notice increased awarness of God’s presence in your life everyday.
